This summer I spent a week with a drug dealer
Ok, so he wasn´t dealing anymore. And actually this isn´t the first time this has happened. As part of a joint Young Life - Cumbre leadership training we got to spend a week with this young man and 20 others. His childhood friends were dead or in jail, but he had given his life to Jesus and was excited about growing and sharing this hope with other youth in his neighborhood and we were there to help him develop tools to do so. This year we have been focusing more on not only the technical and practical aspects of adventure ministry but in the heart-searching, soul-wrenching reality of growth. How does one deal with ongoing personal struggles or a difficult past? How does the community of faith really help in developing effective strategies and habits to overcome these adversities? With the help of Christian counselors that have been joining our team, we have been able to get behind struggling young marriages and individuals to offer real solutions and it has been a joy to see God at work. The beginning of fall semester we were back in Guatemala and after years of investment, a small team has finally begun working on their own. AMG Guatemala partnered with us for a week of technical training and discipleship for participants from Fellowship of Christian Athletes, AMG, and a local church. The result? A small but active team up and running and beginning to do their own adventure outreach with at-risk youth and local Christian leaders. We will continue to train and back them as they grow in this new area of ministry. Cumbre teams in other parts of Mexico continue to grow and the work with the local church and Christian school continue to reach families and youth. So thank you again for your prayers and investment. You are all an integral part of what God is doing here. We love you guys and miss you. For His Kingdom, Victor and Martha Magallón April 2024 Wall Street Journal and MIT come up with a fool-proof strategy for investment. Find something that pays back big Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. - Matthew 13:8 As friends, family, and the support behind Cumbre Youth and Adventure Ministry you may wonder what dividends your investments have been paying out. Here is just one story. And it is a long one. In 2010, Juan Gaona, a youth from the Totonac tribe approached me during a youth camp and said he wanted to get serious with his walk with God. And he did. He joined Cumbre, trained not only to be a guide but to disciple other youth in his area. He traveled to other parts of Mexico to serve at camps, ended up studying at Puebla Bible Seminary, getting married to Susy, pastored a church or two after graduating and for the past 4 years has been leading a mission in San Nicolas de los Ranchos, an unreached area of Mexico. The first believer was an addict who had separated from his wife. He came to Juan and Susy for help. They told him they had no experience in addictions but they had the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He gave his life to Jesus, began the process of restoration, won his wife back, invited his extended family to come know Jesus, and helped provide a building for the sudden birth of a new church. This past easter break we had the joy of helping with a camp out for children from this new group of followers of Jesus. The seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown Praise the Lord for His work. Praise Him for faithful sons and daughters who share His love and forgiveness. Praise him for the family in other parts of the world who pray and give and visit. Thank you so much for being a part of this. Sept 2023 More than 25 years ago, when we started, there were few summer camps in Mexico. But this summer Cumbre staff lead and participated in camps in Guatemala and in 5 states in Mexico reaching thousands of children and youth, seeing countless hearts coming to Jesus. The youth themselves continue to invade campuses, parks, coffee houses and neighborhoods sharing their faith through adventure, music, art, and just old-fashioned friendship In May, a church in Man o War Cay, a remote island in the Bahamas invited us to their mission conference and to spend some time with their youth. We have felt a burden for these youth due to their isolation and few opportunities to connect and grow. PRAY with us as we seek the Lord´s direction in how to continue to collaborate with this church. Also, had the blessing this summer of hosting 2 interns who fit right in and did an amazing job of enriching everything while they were here. In June, Scott Johnson and his family from Siloam Springs joined us in June for a week and a half of adventure and outreach in different areas Then, in July, Berean Bible Church from Pottstown, PA worked with us in building a small basketball court in our neighborhood and some high ropes elements for Oasis camp in Valseqquillo as well as community outreach with the kids and families where we live. PRAY with us as we continue to train and disciple leaders in Mexico and Guatemala, and thank you again for praying, giving, and coming to work alongside us. We appreciate and love you all, Victor and Martha Magallón 4 / 20 / 2023. It has been too long since we have sent out a letter. We appreciate immensely your prayers and investment and although we constantly post on Facebook we realize not everyone uses that platform. Now for the good news…We have been banned from a campus here in Puebla Literally. Grace Followers, the student-lead youth movement has been partnering with YWAM (Youth With a Mission) and has seen enormous impact on the streets, parks and in campuses in Puebla, Querétaro, and Mexico City. Here in Puebla they have been given access to speak openly and start Bible studies in many campuses. On one campus, however, the student leader was detained by campus security and brought to the university director. Here he explained what they were doing and then proceeded to share the gospel with the director and his staff. They promptly ejected him and the team from the campus, but not before taking his picture and letting him know they would proceed legally if he went on campus again. For years we have dreamed and worked and now we are seeing it happen!! Pray with us as hundreds of students are giving their lives to Christ and young believers all over are seeking training and connection. Pray for like-,mindedness among existing churches to work together to disciple this enormous harvest. This is a movement like nothing we have seen before ANYWHERE! Young Life is also partnering with Cumbre, and making inroads in many cities in central Mexico. Pray as we seek to train in technical areas and in ministry applications the new leaders that God is raising up. Pray for a new mission starting this weekend in the tribal area between Puebla and Veracruz in the village of Coahuitlán lead by Ibzán and his new wife, Abigail. Pray for continued healing, restoration, and growth for the boys and girls in the children´s homes where Cumbre is involved. Pray for our involvement with Puebla Christian School leading a small boys group in outdoor skills and trying to show them the love of Jesus firsthand. And again thank you for making this possible through your friendship, prayers, and giving. We love you guys! July 2022 Munching on crunchy fried bananas, I noticed 2 skinny horses and a donkey yoked to a wooden plow, resting under a thorn tree... Less than an hour outside of Puebla, this arid area of tiny villages and limestone paths has been mostly closed to outsiders since we first began exploring here decades ago. The family that owned the animals invited me to share a lunch with them under a scrub oak. Sitting in the dirt we shared my bananas, chicken in red sauce, tortillas, and Coke while swapping stories about flash floods, bandits, and caves in these hills. Then they told me to leave. Really. Now. And not to come back without a permit issued by the local county seat. I plan to get that permit and continue to build relationships in the area, and God has been opening many other doors in the last months. The local church is growing rapidly with new believers, students and an unexpected surge of Central American immigrants. Homeless people wander in and end up staying. Besides classes on the basics of a new spiritual life, baptisms and one on one discipleship we are challenged with new areas and needs and everyone is responding beautifully. The youth themselves are organizing regular times of urban outreach and evangelism. Youth are going out from Puebla to serve in other countries. Adventure workshops are being offered to teach safe climbing at the local cliffs and Cumbre personnel are visiting and working in the local climbing gyms and this opens up tremendous opportunities for sharing the gospel with those new friends. Two local children's homes are now connected with Cumbre and the local church which means 30+ kids from ages 4 to 19 are being discipled through integrating them with the children and youth ministry and offering them opportunities to grow through adventure, vocational training (auto and bike mechanics) tutoring, art, sports and personal relationships. Cumbre and Young Life are working closely to reach at-risk youth across several states in Mexico with tremendous response. Thank the Lord for staff committed to sharing their walk with Jesus and kids who are showing hunger and initiative. Youth in the Totonac tribal area where Ibzan and Fernando have been serving are requesting and receiving training in Bible study methods and technical areas of adventure ministry to be able to serve in the areas where they live. It is amazing, exciting, and sobering to see the need and the explosive growth. PRAY with us that we may be responsible for what is entrusted to us and sensitive to the leading of the Spirit in this time of expansion. Thank you all for being such an enormous and necessary part of this through your prayers and giving. It is an honor to partner with you in this. October 2021 A deaf man, a Korean, and a young mother go on a climbing trip together... And no, it’s not the beginning of a politically incorrect joke. It’s day to day business with Cumbre. A few months ago we took Adolfo, who cannot hear and only communicates through sign language, mountain biking. We made sure not to lose or break him and got him back home safely. But we could only talk by texting back and forth on our cell phones during breaks. Ibzan, one of our leaders, felt God calling him to a new challenge: To learn a bit of sign language and to invite Adolfo and his sisters to take the basic vertical training workshop which opened up a whole new area of outreach with the deaf community. Another new area opening up has been mothers with young children wanting to become certified as climbing instructors. Over the years many of the Cumbre staff married and started families and it turns out this is a natural next step. Also, PRAISE the Lord with us as the Cumbre family grows with new leaders joining the team and members who have been with us for a while strike out on their own initiative as missionaries in different parts of Mexico and the world to share God’s love with others. Tim and his wife Cristi continue to work with Young Life in San Miguel de Allende. Ibzan and Fer are working in tribal areas north of Puebla. John is serving in Haiti and the Dominican Republic on a short trip. PRAISE the Lord as two children's homes here in Puebla have finally opened up to Cumbre participating with them. PRAY for wisdom as we consider invitations to participate and train leaders in other parts of Mexico and the world. Thank you all for being part of the Cumbre family through your prayers, giving and participation. For His Kingdom, Victor and Martha Magallon Faith is the assurance of things you have hoped for, the absolute conviction that there are realities you’ve never seen. Without faith no one can please God because the one coming to God must believe He exists, and He rewards those who come seeking. Hebrews 11:1,6 April 2021 There are still undiscovered corners of the world. And often, as they are explored, they reveal undiscovered corners of our hearts. Adventure does just this. It pushes us into places we had not seen before and God speaks clearer and louder. These last months we have seen adventure bring out new leaders and solidify veterans. It has drawn the curious nearer to see the community of transparency and challenge that we call Cumbre. THANK the Lord for outreach and exploration in the villages of the northern mountains of Puebla and the interest in the youth there to know more of God’s Word. THANK the Lord for YWAM’s participation with us in an advanced climbing workshop in Puebla and Hidalgo. THANK the Lord for reconnection in the state of Guerrero with the local church and a children’s home where we hope to create a leadership team. THANK the Lord that soon we will be able to return to Guatemala and meanwhile the team there has been faithfully at work with the local children and youth. PRAY for Ibzan and Fernando as they work together in Fernando´s hometown to do outreach in surrounding villages and disciple the local youth. Ibzan will be leading a team of college students and graduates the last week of April on this mission trip. PRAY as we restart in-person Sunday services and youth group activities in Puebla. We have moved to a larger facility in anticipation of growth. Just before moving our previous building was broken into and our sound equipment was stolen. Please consider GIVING towards a bass guitar, amplifier, and a keyboard. Please let us know if this is something you would like to invest in. Dec 2020 By now I am a great-great grandfather... In 2003 I began training and discipling a young man named Neftali. In 2005 we left for a sabbatical. By our return in 2007, Neftali had a disciple named Eben. Eben developed a passion for adventure and immediately showed initiative in innovating and sharing his life and faith with others. Now, nearly 15 years later, Eben is married and along with his wife Miriam, continues to attract, teach, and encourage young people in his neighborhood north of Mexico City, preaching and leading worship regularly in his local church, training and organizing young leaders on biking, backpacking, mountaineering, and climbing trips all over Mexico, as well as being a part of missions outreach in Peru and now Guatemala. He is just ONE example of the promise in Isaiah 55:11 of God’s Word NOT returning empty, of the parable in Matthew 13:23 of a seed giving 100 to 1 returns, and of the encouragement in 1 Corinthians 15:58 that our work for the Lord is not in vain. And as far as me being a great great grandfather…well I like to think of our participation with a person giving fruit in the the subsequent generations; a sort of Godly pyramid scheme that ACTUALLY PAYS OFF! PRAISE the Lord for this fruit all over Mexico and for you all who have invested and given and prayed and are part of this harvest. PRAISE God for growth this semester in San Miguel de Allende, in the tribal areas of northern Puebla, and new church plants near the volcanoes east of Puebla and at Oasis, south of Puebla. PRAY for a leadership retreat between Christmas and New Year, development of new leaders in the areas of growth. Praise the Lord for His faithfulness these months! Pray for us to be bold and alert to the extraordinary opportunities around us in these changing times. When Jesus taught the sermon on the mount the disciples had not yet… survived the storm on the lake been sent out in twos been spooked by the Gadarene demoniac been martyred Ibzan lost his father to COVID, carried out a small group discipleship and adventure retreat, and got chased off his ranch by armed bandits. Cesar who coordinates soccer outreach in the state of Guerrero is in the hospital after running off the highway going home after a personal retreat (he tried to not hit some goats) Others are under the stress of prolonged confinement or economic downturn due to the virus. William Faulkner said, “a man is the sum of his misfortunes.” James, the brother of Jesus said, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, The largest storm to date on Earth, super cyclone Tip, in 1979, measured more than 1,300 miles across with winds up to 190 mph. But from 2010, on Saturn, a hurricane raged for 8 months, with winds up to 320 mph. What was really amazing is that it measured more than 79,000 miles across, greater than 10 times the size of earth. "O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor." - Psalm 8:1,3-5 What the next storm will be, we cannot know. But we can anchor to the God and Father who created all. Praise the Lord for effective and growing online ministries. Praise the Lord with us for new believers and deepened relationships during this time of testing. Pray with us for those who have lost loved ones and are walking through that grief. Pray for wisdom as we sow in faith into difficult times expecting the Lord to guide us forward. March 2020 "For a while I struggled with panic attacks; wondering about death. I had thought I had buried all of that. Rock climbing brought it all back. It has made me think. We need to do this more…we need to talk more.” Yesterday we took some new friends climbing for the first time to share Christ with them. Right away one of them opened up about the loss of his brother and all that has provoked in his life. Thank the Lord for such a deep and immediate impact. PRAY with us as we seek to follow up and show them how God´s insistent Love answers those fears and all the doubts that whirl about us during these times of uncertainty. For the first couple months of 2020 we had opportunities in Mexico and Guatemala to be involved in camps, leadership training events, and outreach opportunities. Our leaders continue to innovate and find ways to use adventure to reach and open hearts to the Love of Christ. Now as things continue to change, we are leading online services and taking opportunities to get outside in twos and threes to continue to share God´s hope. Pray for wisdom as we continue to adapt and move forward in consideration and boldness. Pray for Ana and Laura in Arkansas with school and jobs cancelled or online. Thank you for your giving, praying, and friendship. Also, please let us know how we can pray for you, your family, your community and your business in these times of change. We would love to be there for you. November 2019 Theodore Roosevelt once said, "Choose good people and then get out of the way." Actually he didn´t. His quote meant the same thing but it was a lot longer and I really didn´t want to make you read it all so you can look it up if you want to. But that´s what he meant to say. And that has been the case. Years ago Martha and I prayed for the Lord to lead us to young men and women, hungry for Him and eager to share his love and lead others. And He has. The new Cumbre team in Guatemala is using climbing more than 40 weeks out of the year to reach children and youth. And the Mexico team has responded beautifully to the call of missions, travelling to Guatemala to help train and support this new branch of Cumbre. In Mexico, regional teams are using hiking, climbing, biking, camping and weekly meetings to reach youth, share the hope of Jesus Christ and form new leaders. The adventure and youth ministry is multiplying and deepening in the hands of these leaders who are training leaders. We are watching II Timothy 2:2 in action... Whatever you heard me teach before an audience of witnesses, I want you to pass along to trustworthy people who have the ability to teach others too. Thank you all for being part of that audience of witnesses, for your investment in prayer and giving, for coming to work alongside us. You are part of Cumbre September 2019 8 Youth lost in the dark woods with a variety of injuries were found by our team. After treating cuts, head wounds and even open fractures they were carefully moved out of the rainy, mosquito-infested forest and into a nearby house where they cleaned up and prepared for the next mock-up scenario (none of them were really hurt or lost). This 3 day Wilderness First Responder workshop was coordinated by Pepe and Nicole Ceballos and a team from Endeavor, a discipleship program from Montana. This workshop was an answer to prayer as Cumbre continues to prepare to serve those around us in difficulties from accidents to natural disasters. It was a fitting finish for a wonderful summer with Cumbre participating in 8 camps in urban and rural areas in various states. Now that the semester is restarted the student - lead youth ministry is EXPLODING! Thanks to the initiative of a team of students who are in Love with Jesus, hungry for the Word, and concerned for others, the group no longer fits in our living room OR in the nearby café where the weekly Bible studies were moved. PRAISE the Lord with us for this blessing of growth. PRAY for the student leaders as they reach out to other students and as we disciple them. You can follow that movement here: https://www.facebook.com/gracefollowers/ PRAY as we prepare to lead a team the first week of October from Cumbre Mexico to coordinate with the newly established Cumbre team in Guatemala to carry out a climbing outreach and some intermediate training. THANK the Lord with us as the local church continues to grow and PRAY with us as we are outgrowing our building - that the Lord would lead us to where He would want us to go from here. March 2019 He said it. “I will make you fishers of men…” And there we were, fishing this man with paralyzed legs, out of a 92 chevrolet pickup truck which teetered on the edge of a precipice. The rear axle and one front wheel were tenuously clawing at the mud of the edge of a jungle road over a steep drop into the rainforest. His sister-in-law and two children, shaking and crying had already jumped out of the uphill window and Martha and Lupita hugged and prayed God´s peace over them. God had brought us to the village of La Union to support a new mountain biking ministry team started by Rogelio, Sylvano, and Israel. This day they lead us up a steep mountain road, pedalling wearily, when shouts for help rang out. All were safely extricated and the pickup towed to safety by a passing dump truck. Lupita knows the family and will be able to follow up. Thank the Lord for His timing and guidance. Thank Him for the initiative and passion of these youth from La Union in starting this new ministry of outreach and discipleship and for reviving the age-old tradition of circuit riding preachers (now they use the bicycles to reach remote villages and preach there) Thank the Lord for a safe border crossing and help from believers who live in Nuevo Laredo. Praise our Father for a wonderful time with Journey from Camp Bighorn in Montana as we supported the Cumbre´s ministry team in the rainforest of Cuetzalan with construction, exploration and outreach. Praise the Lord for new contacts with non-believers in the city of Puebla through recent mountain biking outings and through the visit of the Maples family from Arkansas. Praise the Lord for openings with locals and law enforcement in the village of San Francisco Temetzotla, Tlaxcala where we recently began exploration. Praise God for 4 youth from the local church who were baptized this last Sunday and are committed to growing in their relationship with Jesus. Pray with us as our Father guides us to follow up with these new contacts and coordinate with our personnel to begin training in Guatemala in the coming months. For His Kingdom, Victor and Martha Magallón September 2018 There is a story of a young man at a crossroads trading his soul to the devil to be able to play the guitar like none other. Trading the eternal for a glimpse of acceptance among humanity. We all stand at crossroads. Moments of lucidity where we realize we can choose. Past that point it often seems there is no choice. Life and pain and fear and need crowd in and push us along, dragged by unseen hands to unexpected places. The problem is that the crossroads was never the devil´s to use. It is a lie that he can offer anything at all. He comes only to kill and steal and destroy. Jesus met a girl at her crossroads. He leaned by a dusty well in Samaria and spoke to her heart and she saw hope and chose. The crossroads belong to Him. We sat at a table in Guatemala´s Zone 3, a tangle of trash-choked alleys and run-down buildings, in a school that had been abandoned by the government. AMG moved in and began reaching the children of the area, offering clases up to 6th grade, and above all, offering hope. Martha and I had come to meet the students and hear life from their point of view. One young girl´s pretty face and arms were criss-crossed with massive scars from a bomb thrown through the window of their home when her brother tried to leave a gang. She told us about stumbling home another day, when shots rang out. Habitually high on drugs she staggered away, unaware that she taken a bullet. Near home, because of the drugs, she was unable to remember if her brothers had been with her, so she returned to the site to find them both shot. They survived, but she was later thrown out of her grandmother´s house where she lived. One day she entered the school out of curiosity. A teacher cornered her and sat her down in a classroom. “I have to leave, I just came to look around.” “You can stay for class.” the teacher insisted. “I...I didn´t bring a notebook.” Sliding a blank sheet of paper and a pen on the table in front of her the teacher looked her kindly but firmly in the eyes. “Today you have to stay because I am going to make you. Tomorrow you will return because you want to.” And she did. Compelled by the loving kindness of the staff she returned day after day, gave her life to Christ, and this September she will finish grade school at the age of 16 or 17. She wants to go on studying and maybe someday be an accountant. This young girl is one of near 5000 children and youth in AMG´s schools and outreach centers in Guatemala. The challenge is that AMG´s programs only offer education and activities through 6th grade. They have begun partnering with Young Life and Fellowship of Christian Athletes but are short-staffed in all areas. As we talked with the director of AMG Guatemala he said about this girl, that humanly speaking, it could go either way. Now we are confident of this, that He who began a good work in her, will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. But we see that there is an opportunity to partner in continuing to reach and disciple these young men and women from the inner city and villages of Guatemala. Over the years, God has raised up leaders in Mexico through Cumbre to address precisely these needs. We are at our own crossroads and intend to follow His leading and offer the abilities and experience of Cumbre to partner with AMG Guatemala. PRAY with us as God moves specific leaders and teams from Mexico to commit to this opportunity. For His Kingdom, Victor, Martha, Ana and Laura Magallón August 2018 I have no snappy headline or gripping story. Only this... Thank you Jesus for the team of leaders and instructors you have raised up. Thank you for camps taking place at 7 sites reaching thousands of children and youth with the hope of salvation through Jesus Christ. Thank you for hundreds that made decisions to put their trust in You. Thank you for the faithful sons and daughters who through their prayers and giving and going to join in the work of the Kingdom have had part in this harvest. “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” - I Corinthians 15:58 We are at a joyful junction with the growth of Cumbre. Martha and I will travel to Guatemala this weekend (August 24) to meet with leaders from AMG Guatemala and speak to local youth about the possibility of beginning Cumbre in Guatemala. We would be using leadership from Mexico to pass on the vision and experience they have gained through years of following Christ and learning and developing adventure ministry in their own country. PRAY for wisdom and humility as we listen to the hearts and needs of those we are going to meet and follow the Lord as He shows us how to use what He has shown us in this new field. THANK the Lord with us. Laura starts her freshman year and Ana her Senior year at John Brown University. Both have been blessed with academic scholarships and are enjoying their studies. June 2018 “There is another cave but we haven´t gone in. He´s afraid of it.” The other young man laughed nervously. “Why? Is it unstable? Does it look like it could collapse?” “No. The mouth looks solid but there are altars and candles to the cult of death.” “Oh” So we hike out and had a look and sure enough, the entrance was littered with stone and wood altars, amulets, and rivulets of molten wax running out of countless votive candles with the bony face of death stamped on them. I paused, asking Jesus what we should do, and then following His leading we prayed over the area, smashed the altars, and fearlessly lead a group of local youth to see a beautiful waterfall deep in the cave. “He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world.” During March team from Bighorn in Montana joined us to work with Compassion International children and go caving with local youth, all hosted by Cumbre staff from the rainforest region of La Union in Puebla. Lupita and Leo organized as we participated in the beautiful project God is developing there. 170 children of all ages showed up for game, meals and teaching at the church while the caving group included around 20 of the older youth. To finish off, Cumbre and Bighorn spend some time reflecting on lessons learned and climbing at El Chico National Park Later in the month Eben and Leo worked with me building our cottage outside of Puebla where we hope to live when we move back. The construction is probably about 70% finished. Also in Puebla, children from the Alfred Binet School joined us for a day of rappelling, hiking and ziplining in Tlatlauquitepec, Puebla with Angel Gomez and his sons. April found us in Utah with Colorado Springs University School helping with a canyoneering retreat focusing on learning to hear the guidance of God. In May, Laura finished high school (and has been accepted at John Brown University to study creative writing and journalism) and we joined New Life Ranch for their high ropes course training. Pray with us as the staff of Cumbre prepares for summer camps and vbs in the states of Oaxaca, Puebla, Mexico, Jalisco, Hidalgo, and Veracruz. Pray that the Lord would prepare hearts. Thank Him for the opportunity to be near our daughters in this time of transition and for His provision through academic scholarships.
